Hi Terez,
Do you have a HTML editor?
You can get an excellent, totally free,(No trial period) one here:
http://www.nvu.com/download.php
You'll find manual/instructions on how to use nvu HTML editor here:
http://www.nvu.com/websitehelp.php
If you are wanting to design or edit pages, this is a very simple HTML editor, to help get you started.
First thing is to become familiar with the nvu HTML editor...
Once you have downloaded & installed the nvu editor software, try calling up your site in the nvu editor.
Do this by following theses steps:
1. Click on nvu desktop icon (or find nvu exe file in" computer/c Drive/programs). to activate software
2. Click on "File" at the very top, right-hand side
3. From the drop-down list choose "open web location"
4. Copy & paste the WEB address (URL) of your website into the address box provided, & click on "create" button (under address box).
5. Now explore your WEB page & experiment - Try editing wording & images - Not sure? Then read nvu instructions (click on help at top of nvu program).
6. Once you have edited page, you can hit the "save as" button & choose save as HTML file (HTML File is the default option - Already chosen for you)
7. Choose a file name before saving - If you are editing your homepage, you will save it as "index.html" (No quotation marks).
A WORD ON USING NVU TO SAVE
FINAL EDITED HTML
I don't!
why?
NVU often drops image URL's on "save" NOT GOOD!
HOW I SAVE MY NVU EDITED HTML (Edited WEB page)
1. When you are happy with the look & feel of edited page, click on html source tab at bottom of NVU ("Source").
2. The source code will now be displayed
3. Click on "edit" at top of page, and from the drop-down list, choose "select all"
4. Now all HTML source code will be highlighted
5. Right click on any high-lighted section & choose "copy"
6. From your computer desktop choose: "notepad" (Not wordpad)
7. That is from computer desktop screen: click on "start"/all programs/accessories/notepad
8. When you have notepad activated (open) - Right click on empty space & choose "paste"
9. Now save the page with a file name that is appropriate. example: If I was editing my web page:
http://www.rodgersmetamorphosis.com.au/TroveTVonYourPCIndex.html I would save the edited page as: TroveTVonYourPCIndex.html When saving with notepad leave option box titled "save as" at it's default setting: (Text Documents [*.txt] & "Encoding" at it's default setting: (ANSI). From notepad's (very top) "save in" option box, choose "desktop".
Again - if you are saving your main home page, You would save it as; "index.html" Not sure which page is your main index html file?
BE CAREFUL!!
To be sure which page is your index.html page, call your index page up! Example: I would confirm my index page by calling up my Main web page address in IE browser, and then adding index.html at the end:
http://www.rodgersmetamorphosis.com.au/index.html & then clicking on browser refresh button.
IMPORTANT: As you you make different changes, to the page you are editing, take the time to click "save" or "save as" - As often as possible!
Why?
If you accidentally close nvu, or nvu "crashes" (which it occasionally does), you will be kicking yourself - Especially if you have spent 1 hour or more, editing WEB pages.
TO VIEW YOUR EDITED WEB PAGE
Browse your computers "desktop" for your newly edited & saved HTML file, & double click on it.
Check for incorrect spelling (Click on nvu's spell-check button, during edit phase, to minimise spelling mistakes). Incorrect images, etc.
If everything is correct, send your edited html file, to your server using WISE-ftp:
http://www.rodgersmetamorphosis.com.au/WISEftp.php
And....
Have fun, fun, fun, fun, fun, 'til ya daddy takes ya t-Bird away!
While this all, may seem a bit bewildering, take your time, read the nvu manual & experiment! I find most of my answers through experimenting.
