I don't know why this happened as I was uploading a file at the moment so there WAS transfer. I have max simultaneous uploads set to 1 so that can't be the problem. Luckily the upload kept going but why did the connection close ?!?

Sorry for the delay!
Does this problem persist? Do you get this error message every time you are uploading a file to your server? Maybe only the control connection is closed after 10 minutes, but the transfer session is not until its finished. It depends on how your provider configured the FTP Service.
