Connection Failed - WHY?
I am a newbie, and need help.
I've been connecting to my website via WISE-FTP successfully for many months now on my flatmate's computer, for some reason I am unable to do the same on my computer. I have tried changing all the settings to equal that on my flatmate's laptop.
Every time I try to connect I get a message like this:
! <--- [] --->
! Connecting to ... (25/03/2008 11:18:48)
! Unable to connect: ! ()
! <--- [ftp.frazerguinness.com] --->

! Unable to connect: ftp.frazerguinness.com! (500 ESocketException: connect: WSocketResolvePort: Cannot convert port 'ftp', Error #11004)

What am I missing? What am I doing wrong? Help please!

Re: Connection Failed - WHY?
Hello,
Usually this error is caused by missing or corrupted files 'services' and 'protocol' on your system at C:\<WINDOWS>\system32\drivers\etc\
In most cases, a third-party program has renamed these 2 files from
'services' -> 'services.dat'
'protocol' -> 'protocol.dat'
and as a result many programs like Wise-FTP cannot convert string 'ftp' into a default port number.
To fix this problem we would suggest 2 solutions:
1) Always use in the Wise-FTP Site Manger the real number as 'Port' (usually this is 21 or 3128);
2) Rename the above mentioned files in C:\<WINDOWS>\system32\drivers\etc\ :
'services.dat' -> 'services'
'protocol.dat' -> 'protocolt'
These files must have no any extensions!
Best regards

Re: Connection Failed - WHY?
Thanks for your help!
Just checked those two files in your suggestion, and neither have file extentions in their names.
So, now what?

Hello,
it seems that something with your system is wrong, maybe the content of the files "protocol" and "services" is corrupted. You can send us these two files and we will look at them.
Did you also try to use the port number 21 instead of "ftp"?
Best regards

Re: Connection Failed - WHY?
I tried to attatch the files to this reply but the forum says that "The extension is not allowed."
Tried 21, to no avail.

Hello,
you can also send us the files "protocols" and "services" by e-mail to support@acebit.com, we will then have a look at them.
