Open URL (F5) unexpected behavior in 3.2.2

Postby thumbtech » Tue Apr 08, 2008 1:33 am

My primary browser is IE7.

Under Internet Options -> General / Tabs / Settings, I have selected the option to "Open links from other programs" as "New Tab in the Current Window".

The expected behavior is therefore that choosing "Open URL" in PD will open the specified URL in a new tab in the current IE7 window. In an earlier version of PD, clicking on the single globe behaved as expected. Similar program functionality, e.g., choosing the Help -> Home Page in PD, always has and continues to work as expected.

However, on my system, selecting open URL always opens a new IE7 window. I would prefer if it behaved as before and respected this IE7 setting.

Hello,

unfortunately we cannot do much about this as Microsoft does not provide information about the commands which are needed to open an URL in a tab yet.

As soon as we have any documentation about this, we will find a solution for this problem.

Best regards

I understand. Thank you.

A useful solution you may want to consider is to let the user set the Primary or Secondary browser to an option specified as "System Default" as opposed to a specific application, then if the Open URL command is triggered to a browser specified as "System Default", you just throw the generic open url (like Help menu -> Home Page) and let the system handle it instead of trying to get clever and open a specific application first.

You have a good product! Thanks!

I just want to make sure this gets passed along to the development team as a feature request, since if you are having to wait for Microsoft to learn how to script tab behaviors in IE, it may never happen!

The above suggestion is the easiest and most effective method to solve this problem, as well as being the accepted convention for numerous products from publishers such as Adobe, ActiveState, etc. (see attached screenshot from Komodo Edit preferences).

Hello,

thank you very much for your suggestion. We will forward this to the responsible product manager, maybe this can be implemented in a next version of Password Depot.

Best regards
