Some downloads get error 10054

Post by JBattin » March 28th, 2010, 10:47 pm

Here is the error: Data: Receive Error - Connection reset by peer (#10054)

For some reason on some files that are binary. It doesn't happen with all binary files though. It's only been in the past 3 weeks or so that this error started.

It appears it's something on my side, because this error occurs on different hosting accounts.

I have passive set in my ftp config.

Anyone have any insight into this.

Thanks for the help.

Jan

If it appears on different hosting accounts (from different ISP) it could be connected with your internet connection or with your firewall. Did you installed any new firewall/security software?

Yes I get it on different ISP's - not the same hosting accounts, that's why I think it's something on my side. I haven't installed any new firewall's (but have a router). I closed down my firewall (Zone Alarm) to try without it running and I had same issue. It's weird because it doesn't happen with every file.

I decided to use some other FTP software to see if I had the same issue. I used Filezilla on a file that I consistently got the above error on, and Filezilla handled the file properly.

Here's something interesting: this file that has been giving me problems (it's happened on other files, I just don't remember what they were), works when editing but get's the 10054 error on a view.

Doesn't make sense to me, but I'd like to know what's causing the problem because when I'm downloading a backup of my sites, there's files that won't download now.

What I like about Wise-FTP is that multiple files can be downloading at the same time, but this issue creates havoc for me.

Hello,

Thank you for the update!

In this case, it would help us a lot to locate the problem if you could provide us with a test account on the according server. If this is possible please send us the log-in information to support@acebit.com.

In addition, it might be useful if you could sent us the complete log of such a failed connection attempt.

Thanks in advance & best regards

OK will do - let me figure out files that I've been having trouble with. This may take me a little while to do.

Do I just need to set up a test ftp account?

Hello,

Yes, exactly. Simply an FTP account which has access to a temporary directory on the server.

Best regards

Thank you for the test account. We just logged in and could transfer many files with no problem or error message.

Please check your internet connection and firewall. We can not give you a better hint since all looks to work fine.

It would help of course, if you could somehow reproduce that problem (e.g occurs on a specific time only, or with some file types, file sizes etc)

What is interesting is that I specifically selected these files because they were the ones that I got the error with. After I saw your post yesterday, I went out and transferred them all without any error. Next I transferred the directory without any issue.
Today I go try it and I get the error on 3 files, but by the time it got through some retries - they were successful.
I have shut down my firewall and I still have the same issue, so I'm sure that's not the issue.

I appreciate your help and your testing.
